NB-IoT & 5G


What does NB-IoT mean?

The abbreviation NB-Iot stands for "Narrow Band Internet of Things". In practice  NB-IoT represents a technology which is based on LTE, so 4G. The technology will enable the mobile network operators the possibility for offering new services, which can be relative easily implemented into the already existing radio networks - without the need to buy new and expensive antennas, and without the need to buy new and even more expensive frequency bands. For example, the connectivity for power meters, telemetry devices of all kinds, heating machines, light control is improved compared to existing radio technologies. Furthermore, NB-IoT allows  - thanks to much higher spectral efficiency, a much better radio propagation into buildings ("deep indoor"). Where the "normal" mobile service almost no or poor coverage delivers, for example in the basement, NB-IoT can still establish radio connections. A typical application is the remote meter reading  - called "Smart Metering".

By using very low power radio devices may operate more than 10 years on batteries - complete independent from the electrical grid - lots of complete applications are made possible, beyond the classical ones, in both  - private and professional - domains. If it is safety-, medicine-, building-, automotive-, construction-, kitchen-, industrial machine- technique, agriculture and environmental protection, controls and sensors  of all kinds, in almost all domains NB-IoT services and devices will be used. And the cost of NB-IoT- devices are expected to fall below 2 for each unit soon.

NB-IoT will be used in addition to 5G. Applications which high data rates need a low latency - like video streaming or gaming - will be supported by 5G in the future. Applications with low data rates in the Internet of things world will be supported by NB-IoT. 5G and NB-IoT are - so to say- the two sides of the same coin - tailor-made for the respective application.

The year 2018 is expected to be the transitional year for the breakthrough of NB-IoT. The overall number of  active connected NB-IoT application is estimated to amazing 5 billions until end of 2018 - and even 25 billions until end of 2020.



What do we offer regarding NB-IoT?

brown-iposs does offer the support of the integration of NB-IoT in existing mobile operator networks. A special planing tool was developed for project support. Furthermore, brown-iposs is as well able to support the implementation of the required nodes in the core.

Finally, brown-iposs supports the validation and optimization of the NB-IoT services after implementation is done - another core competence of brown-iposs.
